Ever changing rock sculpture at the entrance to our bamboo grove

Here in the Hocking Hills region of Ohio we sit right at the the glacial terminus, and as such the area is rich with sand and clay deposits. Within a few miles from my house is an aggregate and block manufacturing company. I’ve used them for years for sand and gravel, but recently discovered the real gems!

In the very back, behind where the concrete trucks wash out, is a hidden pile of rejects and discards, cinder blocks that broke or didn’t mold correctly, other pieces that or for one reason or another are no longer useful commercially. They sell it, come to find out, for about $5 a ton. So I go back and cherry pick interesting pieces for 30 minutes by hand, and drive away with a truck bed full for $3!

All the pieces in this sculpture were harvested from the discard pile, and It’s fun when art isn’t taken too seriously, so this sculpture is impermanent, much like the bamboo. The delivery driver has knocked it over, I’ve knocked it over, yet it just keeps coming back, each time in different form. It’s been a wonderful addition right at the entrance!
