What are Tiger Tails?
The short answer
Well designed handmade bamboo door beads for the modern hippie, a beautifully rich and warm addition to any home! The long answer
After experimenting with various designs of bamboo door beads, this one stood out as the best looking and most functional style that I tried. Made up of alternating bamboo rings and tubes strung together on a single strand of braided polypropylene twine, the same stuff we use in our wind chimes. The rings prevent the tubes from piling up like a runaway train, yet the tubes still have a range of motion on the string, and collectively each strand has a nice sort of whipping motion, akin to the twitching of... a Tiger Tail! Once several Tiger Tails are put close together, the motion or walking through them creates pleasant woody natural tones, similar to bamboo wind chimes.
Each individual piece of bamboo was harvested from our chemical and pesticide free groves in Ohio and heat treated using various artistic open flame techniques, which not only give these their stunning good looks, but aid in durability and longevity. The string is tied through the bottom ring, heat sealed, threaded through a tube, looped around a ring, then repeated until the string is tied and heat sealed around an 1.25" diameter key ring at the top. My wingspan is the rough draft for the length of the standard Tiger Tails, which turns out to be a finished length of around 5'3", give or take a few inches, which we find works great, long enough in doorways to readily engage with us humans, while not interfering too much with our pets, or cleaning the floors. The diameters of the bamboo vary as do the designs. These are like snowflakes, never two alike!
These sweet beaded strings are durable with lots of possibilities. I’ve custom made all sorts of lengths for arches and other arrangements, and there are lots of options for hanging them. I like to simply run a line of small wood screws (with decent heads to keep the rings from just sliding off the screw) every one to two inches or so along the top frame of a door or walk through area. Then I can experiment with different arrangements. Spread them out, group them together, try different size gaps, etc. In our house leaving gaps to be able to easily part while walking with a plate of food, or while carrying a dog, are the way to go. I’ve also made custom rods out of bamboo to hang them like curtains in a window.
Sure you could get bamboo beaded curtains with stock graphics, likely mass manufactured in another country, for less money, but why? Our Tiger Tails are carefully hand crafted in America with natural bamboo of various sizes, every strand unique. More than decor, these become an active member of a household, providing an audio-visual experience that can actually "slow your roll" and help keep you grounded to mother earth!
