Why bamboo mulch?

Domestic Bamboo, small batch American grown mulch

The SHORT answer:

Stronger healthier plants with less effort and intervention.

Shredded bamboo mulch not only provides the typical benefits of other mulches: retaining moisture, adding nutrients as it decomposes, and tamping down weeds, but has several other benefits that you simply don’t get with any other type of mulching product! In addition to making a superior top cover, shredded bamboo also makes for a great soil amendment.

Shredded bamboo makes for superior mulch

The long answer:

Super high silica content.

Bamboo is the superstar when it comes to a plant based source, some studies show it containing over 70% organic silica, more than ten times the level found in the horsetail plant, which most people consider a mega source. The benefits of adding extra silica to your plants diet are lengthy and legendary! It increases resistance to environmental stress, pathogens and pests. It strengthens cell walls and improves the uptake of water and minerals and adds an extra level of protection against fungal diseases such as powdery mildew. Undeniably beneficial to growing plants.

Super slow decomposition rate.

Shredded bamboo mulch decomposes at a much slower rate than timber based woody mulches, meaning it lasts longer and needs applied less often.

Super low nitrogen draw-down.

Since timber based mulches decompose quicker, they pull nitrogen out of the soil and in turn your plants late in the season, in order to fuel the process. Plants suffer from lack of nitrogen while the process continues. Eventually though, decomposition does its thing, and no longer needs the nitrogen, and kicks it back into the soil, often in a large dump. Plants then get burned from the nitrogen overload. Extra care must be taken to balance the high nitrogen drawdown of most mulches. With bamboo, not so much. there is virtually no nitrogen draw-down, meaning less time and money spent on fertilizers.

Super loyal.

It will stay with you through the stormy weather. Bamboo mulch is permeable, meaning water kind of goes through it. The twigs and leaves sort of stitch together, and unlike the woody mulches that lift and float away in heavy rains, particularly on sloping ground, bamboo mulch tends to stay put, right where you you put it.` ``

Super sustainable and climate friendly.

Compared to an equal sized stand of trees, bamboo will generate over 30% more oxygen and sequester 2x- 5x the amount of carbon, depending on the tree species. Trees require decades to harvest, bamboo generally in 2-3 years, but with our shredded bamboo mulch we can harvest year 1 growth, repeatedly, every year, all without the use of herbicides, pesticides, or chemicals of any sort.

Super stylish.

Consider this, every other bag of mulch out there comes from trees. Sure you can get some chips or shreds that have been chemically dyed, but generally after a while it all kind of looks the same, because it all derives from the same plant. Shredded bamboo mulch is different and breaks up the monotony of your garden aesthetic while providing superior results.

Handfuls of shredded bamboo mulch!

Why Domestic Bamboo mulch?

For starters, you’ll know right where your mulch grew up, in our totally chemical, pesticide, and herbicide free groves in Southern Ohio, USA. Each batch of our bamboo mulch is shredded on a tarp, using limbs, branches, tops, and leaves of only bamboo (stout poles have other uses) with no other plants going through the shredder except bamboo to reduce any influx of seeds or debris from other plants, though occasional blown in tree leafs make it into the final batch. It is then spread in a thin layer and left outside in the sun for several days. It is tossed about a few times and kept under cover during rain and at night. The process desiccates and cures the bamboo. Once bagged in our breathable woven sacks and left to cure further in our solarium, the end result is a durable lightweight dried bamboo mulch, that is also a top notch soil amendment.

I go through by hand and pull out any large chunks of bamboo that didn't get broken down a little. Then load up each bag with a mix of finely shredded, and some not as much. The mix of leaves and twigs and chips of various sizes make for an "extended time release" as the window of decomposition and nutrients is expanded. Any green will eventually fade out, and becomes beige after it is used and begins to see constant weather.

We use 15" x 24" Ohio manufactured polypro breathable weave feed bags. For reference that's the same size as 15 pound dog food bags. We loose fill the bags to within a few inches of the top with a light tamping and without compression to keep the mulch light and airy as it continues to cure in the sacks. Turns out to be 8-10 gallons, about 2- 1/2 pounds, fluffs up about 1.5-2 cubic feet. NOTE: In order to save on shipping we take our 15" x 24" bag full of mulch, roll the top over and compress it, similar to the cartoon version of packing a suitcase. Not ideal as the bags may not appear full when they arrive, but it sure saves some money on shipping!

Our bamboo mulch gives your potted plants a bit more pizzazz than the traditional stuff, plus it's actually more effective at doing what you want your mulch to do!
