These natural bamboo mason bee tubes have been harvested from our chemical and pesticide free groves in Ohio, USA. Mason bees are solitary, gentle,non-aggressive pollinators. Mason bees visit fruit and nut trees, some berries, and a few early spring flowers. A single mason bee will visit between 1,600 to 2,400 blossoms daily with a 95% pollination rate, whereas honeybees have a 5% pollination rate. More pollination less fear.

This listing is for:

50 natural untreated bamboo tubes about 5 inches long, with assorted diameters generally in the range though to be good sizes for most solitary bees, that will look similar, but not exactly like those pictured. I give a quick twisting hand sand on each end and run a wire through the tube to remove any liner and debris.

I prefer hollow tubes for mason bees houses, rather than ones with nodes that close one end. Yes, the bees will need one end closed, but I find either plywood or other backing sufficient, but also simply jam each tube into natural soft clay dirt and sand. Unlike the bamboo tubes with 1 end closed, these are much easier to clean out should you need to by simply pushing a wire through a few times, running water, bleach etc. Plus, they are easier to split when time comes for cocoon harvesting as the nodes give bamboo it's strength and are thicker, harder, and more difficult to split. A meat cleaver laid on a tube opening, then pop the other end on the ground a few times and the cleaver will split the tube, or a knife blade and a twist often does the trick.

The picture with the wooden box uses 8 inch 2 x 4's, so an inner area of 6 x 6 inches, which took about 125 tubes. Keep jiggling and jamming tubes in, occasional use of a mallet for the last few so that none slide out when tipped. Easy removal and replacement when the time comes. I found an empty Pringles can cut in half to be perfect little boxes for about 25 of these tubes. A can makes 2 small colonies with backs already and easy clean and replace!

Placement and maintenance are key to a thriving colony of efficient and productive mason bees, so do your research- keep it warm dry and stable.
