These culm sheaths are a short lived part of bamboo’s growth cycle with a very short window for harvesting and then, only if the weather is right. Bamboo culms grow very rapidly for a very short time in late spring. As each culm / cane grows it sheds large sheaths (aka husks) at each node which the branches underneath no longer need for protection. These sheaths, once fallen, will then get showered in thousands of much tinier sheaths that provided the same service to every leaf on every branch up and down the plant. All this fresh material is perfect for soaking up the spring rains, helping to both protect and nourish the plant with it’s mulching effect, becoming one again with the earth. However, if the plant happens to be in your front yard, the weather is cooperative, and you’re able to gather these sheaths daily as they fall, they are quite unusual, and bring a very unique look and feel to your setup!

This listing if for:
1 gallon zip bag full of assorted sheaths weighing 2.5 ounces. (Also great for crafts!)

These husks were harvested under rare ideal conditions having further cured in our solarium to insure they are completely desiccated. Unlike leaves, which can be harvested by the handfuls, sheaths aren't that easy. The process involves me crawling around in the grove picking them up 1 by 1, kinda like a chicken after bugs! In addition to being more challenging to harvest, these husks are bigger and more thick and leathery than our bamboo leaves. Some are flatter and leaf like, others rolled up, small and large, so you get a great texture with lots of nooks and crannies for insectivores to hunt. Even though they are dried, they don't crunch apart easily. These were harvested by hand in a natural grove, so even though I was cherry picking the husks, another leaf or a bit of bird poo or something may have inadvertently made it through.

There really isn't a comparable product out there, as very few people have 24/7 access to a bamboo grove or the willingness to harvest them in any sufficient quantity. A superior bamboo product, natural organic sheath husks by the handful that will look great in enclosures for reptiles, snakes, lizards, geckos, beardies, chameleons, insects, small mammals, bio active / black water aquarium setups and more.
